Atelier About Architecture is founded by architect WANG Ni in 2013.

 
WANG Ni holds a Bachelor of design in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from University of Sydney, the atelier is committed to exploring the enlightenment on modern life from the interaction between Eastern and Western civilizations, and to extracting the beauty of everyday life to transform it into a synesthetic experience in contemporary context, so as to discuss the introvert meaning of life style. Atelier About Architecture presided over the architectural and interior design and renovation projects including the headquarters of China Resources University in Xiong'an, W House, The Dog House, House M, House J, among a few others.

 
Atelier About Architecture have been featured multiple times on global professional media platforms such as Dezeen, Archdaily, Divisare, Architectural Digest (AD), Wallpaper, and Elle Decoration, and have been repeatedly selected for Architectural Digest's 'AD100' as well as ELLE Decor's 'A-List' rankings.Wang Ni was also selected for the Phaidon publication "Making Space: Interior Design by Women," which features 250 outstanding female designers from over 50 countries from 1892 to the present, making it a milestone work in the history of women's interior design worldwide. 

 
In 2025, Atelier About Architecture received the Commended Award from the AR House Awards, presented by Architecture Review for Best Residential Project.

 
In 2026, Atelier About Architecture became a Finalist of Architizer A+ Awards for Best Residential Firm.

 
左通右达建筑工作室由建筑师王旎创立于2013年。王旎毕业于悉尼大学，获建筑学本科及硕士学位。工作室以“左通右达”为精神内核，取中正圆融的哲学意向，作为创作与实践的底层方法。

 
工作室自2020年起建构了完整的创作模式，由王旎独立主持运营，形成了以人作为研究本体，探索精神边界与空间体验的深度联结的建筑哲学。设计从日常与自然中提炼诗意感知，转化为身体可抵达的通感体验，以抽象建构回应身体、情感与环境的内向关联，回归居住本质，讨论“人”的身体情感与环境的内向关联，而从转化成生活方式的精神意涵。2020年以来所有项目实践、作品发表、奖项荣誉与媒体成果，均由工作室现核心团队完成。

 
工作室代表作品： M住宅、J住宅，湖畔住宅Residence LL,光隙筑，碧绿之家，海之家，卷心之家，三合院住宅等建筑与改造项目。作品多次登上Dezeen、Archdaily、Architectural Digest、Wallpaper、Elle Decoration等全球专业媒体平台，2015至2025年连续五次入选“安邸100”榜单，作品登上世界权威建筑杂志ABITARE第649期封面，并作为中国唯一事务所，获得Architecture Review颁发的最佳住宅奖AR House Awards评委嘉奖（Commended Award)。

Revealed Through Humanity

 
My architecture originates not from concepts, but from users. Any residence—new or renovated—demands acute spatial perception and deep empathy from its designer: uncovering new lifestyles within constraints, while addressing inevitable fragmentation and complexity.

Discovering order is pivotal to defining life. While order may impose boundaries, it unlocks greater freedom. In my projects, spatial clusters are staggered across floors; every room, large or small, extends toward natural light. A ceiling may span multiple levels; adjacent spaces at different elevations connect via stairs, endowing distinct meanings and connections. Scale, proportion, color, material, finish and light interweave spaces into a cohesive yet distinctive whole. Shifts in direction, height and volume forge a rich, layered experience.

What drives these spatial sequences and atmospheres is the user’s authentic spiritual needs. A residence is not constructed—it is revealed. It reveals the inhabitant’s past, present and future, and the deepest bond between humans and the world.

This revelation is rooted in absolute trust in others. To me, architecture transcends interdisciplinary technical collaboration; it is a creative mindset bordering on ethical. I observe people—their words, movements, inner selves. Through dialogue and prolonged observation, an architect can reach the core of a user’s being.

Thus, architecture is made to be loved, not merely seen. It is not an end, but a premise: only through absolute trust can space become a vessel for memory, emotion and life.

These projects are shared to find kindred spirits—those who empathize with architecture and explore the essence of dwelling together. The internet connects like minds, those who think alike and resonate in harmony.

We choose refined form and exceptional objects, unshackled by empty appearances; we uphold logical continuity, indifferent to fleeting trends; we advocate craftsmanship over superficial innovation divorced from production and utility; we prioritize essence over image. Existence transcends physical comfort—we nurture our souls with care.

以人揭示

 
我的建筑不是从概念开始，而是从使用者开始。住宅，无论是新建还是改造，都要求设计者具有敏锐的空间感知，能与使用者深度共情，在客观限制条件下发现新的生活模式，同时应对不可避免发生的割裂和复杂情况。

发现秩序对定义生活至关重要。建立秩序可能带来限制，却也能激发更大的自由。在项目中，我常将空间的集群错落组织为不同楼层的房间，这些房间无论大小都以自然光的方向延展。比如某一空间的天花板高度可能与多个楼层共享；有时，邻近的不同标高空间会通过楼梯连接，赋予不同的意义与关联。尺寸、比例、色彩、材料、饰面与光线，让每个空间相互交织且独具个性。空间在方向、高度与体量上的不断变化，共同构成了丰富的体验。而驱动创造这些空间序列和气氛的，是使用者真实的精神诉求。住宅的形成是一个揭示的过程。它揭示居住者的过去、现在与未来，揭示人与世界最深层的联系。

这种揭示，建立在对他人绝对的信赖之上。对我来说，建筑设计不仅是技术层面的各专业协作，更是一种近乎伦理姿态的创作心境。我喜欢观察人，观察他们的语言，动态和内心。我相信通过交流和长时间观察，建筑师可以触及建筑使用者生命的内核。所以，建造的结果是为了“被深爱”而非“被观看”。建筑不是目的，而是一个前提——只有在对他人的绝对信赖中，空间才能真正成为容器，容纳记忆、情感、生命。

项目的发布，是为了寻找那些能与建筑共情、能并肩探讨居住本质的同道。互联网的广阔之处在于，总有这样一群人，与你有类似的思考，在同一个频率上共振：

我们选择完美形制与少数卓越器物而不被空洞的表象迷惑；我们笃信逻辑的延续性而对潮流的无常不屑一顾；我们推崇以成熟工艺铸就的作品而不追逐脱离生产与实用的表面化创新。我们以本质为信仰而不以表象为追求。存在并不止步于肉体的舒适，我们要更加悉心照料自己的灵魂。

仍在建造，仍在寻找。

	M住宅是位于北京东部的一栋多层住宅，整栋建筑被树荫包裹，院中草木茂盛，环境自带着某种特别的氛围和质感。

House M is a multi-story home located in the eastern part of Beijing nestled among shaded trees and lush vegetation. The environment exudes a unique atmosphere and texture.

 
住宅主人曾多次描绘记忆深处童年时期对于家宅和居住的印象：低层的楼房，推开窗就是树梢围合的绿意，阳光和高大的书架，深色的水磨石的地面，投射在红砖墙面上摇曳的树影；这种延续几代人的图像记忆，早就沉积成了某种家庭性格，也为这个建筑空间奠定了某种情感与回忆、新与旧交织的气质。

The homeowner described many times their childhood memories etched deep in mind—the impressions of home and life: low-rise buildings, windows that opened directly onto tree canopies, sunlight and towering bookshelves, dark terrazzo floors, and the flickering shadows of trees dancing on red brick walls. These images, passed down through generations, have become part of the family’s character and have laid an emotional and nostalgic foundation for this architectural space—a tapestry interwoven with both the new and the old.

 
原有场地的房屋边界由高墙围合，中心庭院被高墙围在其中，四面围绕的建筑以中庭作为唯一采光来源，房屋近身狭长，开窗洞口有限，室内大部分需要被使用的面积均被困在阴影之下。

The existing site is enclosed by high walls with a central courtyard also surrounded by these walls. The courtyard serves as the only source of light for the surrounding buildings. The rooms are long and narrow with limited windows, leaving much of the interior space left in darkness.

 
整体策略是建立一个沉潜在高墙下的新空间体系。在竖直方向受到限制的情况下，延展水平方向的层次，开启5个尺度不一的庭院；大小庭院可观可游，无论置身何处，不同空间单元之间会产生对望关系。这也观照到多代人共同生活的日常场景。人们在这些若即若离的房间中穿梭，祖孙满堂或者核心家庭的互动，都得到响应。空间以各种方式互相连通，区域之间总是故意留出窥视的空隙，人的视线一直在捕捉新的信息，不用身体运动，视线就在漫游中。

The design seeks to establish a new spatial system submerged beneath the tall enclosing walls. With vertical development constrained, the strategy focuses on horizontal layering by introducing five courtyards of varying scales. These courtyards, both large and small, can be both viewed from afar and physically explored. From any point within the residence, a visual connection is formed between spaces. This echoes the daily life of a multigenerational household. As family members move between these rooms—sometimes close, sometimes apart—their interactions are accommodated and deepened. The spaces interconnect in myriad ways, with intentional gaps left between zones to allow glimpses across them. The scene continuously shifts, giving new information from one perspective to another even without physical movement.

通过变换空间、开窗方向引导光线，营造出可以捕捉场所中自然光全天的连续变化。前院、侧院、平台、天台、天井，每个层级都串联了相应的生活功能，由此带来更丰富的光影体验。虽然周围的高墙依然存在，多重院落之间的空间穿透放大了视觉感知的物理尺度，黑暗变成了可以变换的灰度。在穿插于庭院间的植物掩映下，花园、房间，乃至顶层天台，过渡空间被划分为不同层次，建筑整体空间变得开放和流动，场地因此有了循环体验的可能。

By altering spatial configurations, window orientations, and light guidance, the residence captures the changing qualities of natural light throughout the day. The front yard, side yard, terraces, rooftop, and atriums each correspond to different aspects of daily life, collectively offering a rich play of light and shadow. Although the surrounding walls remain, the spatial porosity between courtyards amplifies visual perception, stretching the physical sense of scale. Darkness is transformed into a gradation of shifting grays. Under the concealment of interspersed plants, gardens, rooms, and transitional spaces are layered and defined, while the overall architecture remains open and fluid, offering a continuous and cyclical experience across the site.

 
空间是信息，建筑是现象，材料的张力提供了身体和触觉的最终体验。把原有建筑经年累月的材料变化分类与聚合，创造出了这个住宅的定制材料；一种具有大颗粒籽石的染色混凝土，以垂直方向制造梯形凹凸，预制成900x2200的整块混凝土干挂板；屋顶部分使用原色钛锌板金属屋面，连接露台小粒水磨石整体浇的地面；使用杂石混凝土整体浇筑成可以围坐的中岛，桌子和花台。这些构筑和材料交织构成了贯穿建筑内外的物理体验。回望这些内向的空间，在材料和光线的包裹下，气氛堆叠变得静谧而坚实。从入口穿梭游弋至屋顶天台，仿佛也是一场“自由在高处”的精神之旅。体验空间就好像观察一个人，起初只是注意其容貌，逐渐了解其为人，慢慢摸清其生活习惯，试着靠近内心世界，直至理解其精神与灵魂。

At the heart of architectural design is the creation of physical space where our bodies can reside. Space conveys information, architecture manifests as experience, and the tension within materials delivers the final sensory and tactile impressions. By categorizing and synthesizing the natural aging of the original building materials, a customized material for this residence was developed: a pigmented concrete with coarse aggregate, cast into vertically ridged trapezoidal shapes prefabricated as 900x2200 mm dry-hung panels. These panels form a sequential material experience both inside and outside the building. Looking back at this introspective physical space—enveloped in material and light—the atmosphere becomes serene and solid. The experience is like getting to know a person: we first notice their appearance, then understand their character and habits. We may then venture into their inner thoughts and memories and ultimately connect with their spirit and soul.

 
感知是自然赋予我们的标尺，去衡量真实性，去体验趣味，为一切赋予意义。感知让我们理解并对材料、建造和空间做出恰当的回应。在某种程度上，这个复杂的过程可能就是建造住宅的全部意义——回望每个个体的情感与记忆。

Perception is nature’s metric that allows us to gauge authenticity, experience joy, and assign meaning to all things. It guides our responses to materials, construction, and space. In a way, this complex process is the essence of building a house—a reflection on personal emotion and memory.

	J住宅位于北京西部，整栋建筑坐落在山地高处，北靠香山、东望玉泉山，拥有开阔的风景和视野。住宅主人十几年间旅居海外。院中当年栽下的花木依然葱郁，与久未打理杂生的野草、红砖外墙、阳光房斑驳的金属表面一起，凝固了那个时代的片段。

House J is located in the western part of Beijing, perched high in the mountains. To the north lies Fragrant Hills Park (Xiangshan Park), while to the east, the view opens toward Yuquan Mountain, offering broad and expansive vistas. The owner of the residence spent more than a decade living abroad. The flowers and trees planted in the courtyard years ago remain lush and vibrant. Alongside them, untended wild grass has grown freely, while the red brick exterior walls and the weathered metal surfaces of the sunroom are fragments of a bygone era.

 
原有场地的房屋位于花园北侧，建筑内部不成比例的中厅占据了大部分面积，压迫了二层和三层的卧室和起居空间。突出的阳台被包裹成的阳光房，遮挡了大量的光线；过大的进深让房屋地上面积被困在阴影之中。

The original house sat on the north side of the garden. An oversized central hall dominated the interior space, compressing the bedroom and living spaces on the second and third floors. The protruding balcony had been turned into a enclosed sunroom, which blocked a significant amount of natural light. The excessive depth of the building trapped much of its floor area in shadow.

 
主人家庭结构十年间发生了变化，孩子们都已长大独立，旧屋的功能格局已不适配现在的生活方式。一家人日常几乎分散在不同国家生活，而几代人之间也向往落叶归根的聚合状态。主人因此渴求既有充足光线和包裹感，又能相对独立的空间，同时也憧憬“居群山环抱之中，拥有一寸花园”的浪漫图景。

The structure of the owner’s family changed over the past ten years. The children have grown and started their adult lives. The old layout no longer suits their current lifestyle. Family members now live scattered across different countries, while the desire for togetherness across generations has grown stronger. The owner longs for a space that is bathed in light, offers a sense of enclosure, yet remains relatively independent. In the meantime, they also dream of“dwelling among mountains with just a slice of garden to call their own.”&#38;nbsp;


场地北侧临路，与南侧标高最大高差1.5米。东边的侧向花园，又由北至南缓坡下降了半米有余。规划上，整体策略着重利用这种细微但连续的高差变化，对应不同形状，尺度，光影和人们的生活动态需求，创造差异化的空间，将新的形态反映到新的空间中。
The northern edge of the site faces the road, with a height difference of up to 1.5 meters from the southern side. The east-facing side garden gently slopes down by over half a meter from north to south. The overall design strategy takes advantage of these subtle yet continuous elevation changes. By corresponding to different shapes, scales, light conditions, and dynamics of human life, they become a source of differentiated spatial expressions in the new design.

立面上去除了突出的阳台和阳光房，通过扩大或者缩小原始房屋的大小、重置各层楼板的高度形成连贯的尺度感。阳光从天顶开窗流入双层通高的玄关，再经过低矮的过厅，抵达被内向植物围合的客厅空间。经过结构的调整，容纳客厅的盒子被悬挑在建筑的正中心，望向与它错动半米的餐厅和负一层地下花园。混凝土结构梁上翻，形成在悬浮客厅底部的室内花园无柱大空间，让阳光自然流淌。随着各类植物日渐繁盛，客厅的悬浮盒子将会被树梢包裹，与室外庭院花木内外呼应，绿意环绕，重重叠叠。挑高的中庭在二层是去向三间卧室的通道。走廊环绕着悬浮的客厅，空间的错动让抵达每间卧室的路径都不尽相同。回游之间，视线可以穿透室内和室外，回望这双层绿色包裹的庭中之庭。

The protruding balcony and sunroom were removed. The original structure was resized—some parts expanded, others reduced—and the floor heights were reset to create a cohesive sense of scale. Sunlight pours in through skylights into the double-height entrance hall, flows through a transitional space, and reaches a living room enclosed by inward-facing plants. Due to structural adjustments, the living room now occupies a cantilevered box at the very heart of the house, looking out toward the slightly offset dining area and sunken garden. By raising the concrete structural beams, a column-free indoor garden space was created beneath the floating living room. The resulting void allows sunlight to flow naturally through. As various plants thrive, the floating box of the living room will eventually be embraced by tree canopies, echoing the courtyard’s greenery both inside and outside. The double-height central atrium on the second floor becomes a passage leading to three bedrooms. A corridor wraps around the floating living room. Due to the spatial shifts, the path to each bedroom differs. As one walks through the space, views cut through both interior and exterior, revealing a garden within a garden, wrapped in greenery over two levels.

 
这一系列的空间调整，同时为精于厨艺的家中女主人设置了面向客厅和室内外花园的开放厨房。女主人的备餐与男主人的阅读各不打扰，交流却可以在无声的视线中交互中进行。餐厅在空间和材料上都连接了户外的花园，当年种下的植物依旧安守在原位。在山石的引导下，东侧花园作为独立的入口，让访客可以从远山包裹的庭院直接抵达空间重叠的室内。

In this reconfiguration of space, an open kitchen facing both the living room and the indoor-outdoor garden was designed for the owners, who excel in culinary arts. Their food preparation and reading activities remain separated in space, yet communication takes place through silent visual interaction. The dining area, in both layout and materials, connects seamlessly with the outdoor garden. The original plants remain in their original spots. Guided by stones, the east garden serves as an independent entrance, allowing visitors to arrive directly at the overlapping interior spaces from a courtyard embraced by distant mountains.

 
这是一个多维度重叠的花园空间：阳光随着人的活动路径流入室内，室外，半室外，直至充满各角落。这些角落因为不同的处境，提供了丰富的空间信息。在物理层面或是精神层面上，每个人都拥有属于自己的花园。也许是室内和室外的重叠，也许是现实与理想的重叠。重要的是，他们并不通向外部，而是通往内心记忆、精神和灵魂的栖身之所。

This is a multidimensional, overlapping garden space: sunlight flows in along the paths of human activities—indoors, outdoors, and semi-outdoors—illuminating every corner. These corners shaped by different spatial conditions offer a richness of spatial information. Physically or spiritually, everyone has their own garden. It is the overlap between not only indoor and outdoor, but also reality and imagination. What matters is not where these spaces lead to externally, but how they open a path inward to our memory, spirit, and soul.

	Residence LL是位于中国西南地区的一栋多层住宅，面临开阔优美的湖景，建筑面积约500平米。业主夫妇是企业主与古董收藏家，希望在此打造一个优雅而安静的居所。

 由于地理位置的特殊性，原建筑结构标高过于复杂。建筑师首要解决在建筑限定框架中的竖向交通问题；结构上重置两部楼梯与电梯围合的核心筒，区分公共与私密空间。根据居住动线和自然受光方向，开启/封闭各功能空间的物理高度和视觉比例。植入透明与半透明材料，过滤并柔化光线，解决狭长空间的采光与隐私问题。空间上集中交通空间，释放功能空间，让居住和视觉体验自然流动起来。


Residence LL is a multi-story residence located in the southwestern region of China, overlooking a beautiful, expansive lakeside view, with a building area of approximately 500 square meters. The owners, a couple who are business owners and antique collectors, sought to create an elegant and peaceful home.

 Due to the unique geographical location, the original building's structural height was overly complex. The architect's primary task was to address the vertical circulation within the building's defined framework, reconfiguring two staircases and an elevator core to delineate between public and private spaces. Based on the movement flow within the residence and the direction of natural light, functional spaces were either opened or enclosed to adjust their physical height and visual proportions. Transparent and semi-transparent materials were incorporated to filter and soften the light, addressing the challenge of lighting and privacy in long, narrow spaces. The circulation spaces were concentrated to free up the functional areas, allowing the living and visual experiences to flow naturally.

材料方面，建筑师将米色细密云纹大理石敲碎作为骨料，加入卵石与珍珠贝母，用整浇磨石的工艺，打造了细腻富有质感与特殊光感的地面。立面上使用磨砂玻璃砖，天然黑胡桃木与水泥。光线与材料交织在一起，呈现出舒缓，柔和，静谧的氛围，创造回望内心的宁静的场所。


In terms of materials, the architect crushed beige fine-grain veined marble as aggregate, mixing it with pebbles and pearl shells, and used a monolithic terrazzo casting process to create a textured floor with a unique visual quality. The facades feature frosted glass bricks, natural black walnut wood, and cement. Light and materials are interwoven, creating a calming, soft, and serene atmosphere, forming a space that invites introspection and tranquility.
